Organic and regular cotton come from the same plant and produce the same basic fibre; the real differences lie in how the crop is grown and, just as importantly, how the finished fabric is treated afterward. For a baby's skin, the honest answer is that finishing — dyes, resins, and washes — often matters as much as whether the raw cotton was certified organic.
What "Organic" Actually Certifies
Organic cotton is grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilisers, using non-GMO seed and practices like crop rotation intended to protect soil health. In the United States this is overseen by the USDA National Organic Program; internationally, the most recognised textile-specific standard is GOTS — the Global Organic Textile Standard.
Why GOTS Is the Standard That Matters Most
A "USDA Organic" claim on raw cotton fibre says something about the farm, but says nothing about what happens to that fibre afterward — spinning, dyeing, printing, and finishing. GOTS is broader: to carry the certification, a finished textile must contain a minimum percentage of certified organic fibre (generally 70% for "made with organic" and 95% for "organic"), and the entire processing chain must meet restrictions on toxic dyes, formaldehyde-based finishing resins, and heavy metals, along with baseline social criteria for labour conditions. This is the more meaningful certification to look for if you want assurance about the whole garment, not just the raw fibre.
Importantly, a garment can say "organic cotton" on the swing tag without ever carrying GOTS or any third-party certification at all. That claim may be entirely accurate about the farming, and still tell you nothing about the dyes and finishes applied afterward.
Pesticide and Finishing-Chemical Differences
Conventional cotton farming uses more synthetic pesticides and defoliants than organic farming, and this is where most of the real-world difference between the two actually lives — in the field and for farmworkers, not necessarily in the fibre that reaches a nursery. By the time cotton has been ginned, spun, woven or knitted, dyed, and washed, pesticide residue in the finished fabric is generally low, regardless of whether the crop was organic. Independent textile testing has repeatedly found this to be the case, which is part of why bodies like OEKO-TEX certify finished fabric for residual substances rather than treating "organically grown" as sufficient on its own.
The finishing side is where both organic and conventional cotton garments can go wrong in the same ways:
- Reactive or azo dyes — some older or lower-cost dye classes can leave residues linked to skin sensitivity; this applies to organic and conventional cotton alike unless the dye process itself is restricted, as it is under GOTS.
- Formaldehyde-based finishing resins — used to make cotton wrinkle-resistant or "easy care"; a known irritant at sufficient residue levels, and not automatically excluded just because the fibre was organic.
- Optical brighteners and softening agents — applied for appearance or hand-feel, again independent of whether the base fibre was organically grown.
In other words: the word "organic" describes the field the cotton came from. It does not, by itself, describe the dye house or finishing line the fabric passed through next.
Does It Matter for Skin Contact?
Both organic and conventional cotton are breathable, natural, and generally well tolerated by baby skin when the fabric itself is soft, well woven or knitted, and lightly finished. The case for organic cotton is strongest on agricultural and environmental grounds — lower pesticide exposure for farming communities, generally lower water and chemical use in cultivation. Its case as a direct skin-contact safety upgrade over well-finished conventional cotton is weaker than marketing often implies, since the finishing process is the bigger variable for both.
The Cost Trade-off
Certified organic cotton typically costs more, for reasons that are mostly structural rather than arbitrary:
- Organic farming yields are usually lower per acre than conventional cotton.
- Certification, auditing, and chain-of-custody tracking — keeping organic fibre segregated from conventional fibre at every stage — add cost.
- Organic cotton remains a smaller share of global supply, which limits economies of scale.
That premium is a genuine reflection of a more constrained supply chain, not simply a markup on the word "organic."
The Honest Verdict
A well-made, softly finished piece of conventional cotton clothing can be gentler against a baby's skin than a poorly finished "organic" one — particularly if the "organic" claim on the tag is not backed by an actual certification covering the finishing process. If organic status matters to you, look past the word itself and check for a real certification like GOTS with a verifiable licence number. If it does not, prioritise the qualities that affect comfort directly: a fine, softly woven or knitted fabric, minimal stiff finishing, and a brand willing to tell you plainly how a garment was dyed and treated.
